Housing availability is low. This will continue for years because the construction workforce is not robust enough to handle the demand increase as families grow. Increased materials cost and limited availability add another layer to the overall problem.

Redesigning your home interior space is easy with online tools. Mix and match style ideas and details before spending your hard-earned cabbage on a mistake. In the next few minutes, you and I will address styles, how to implement them, and why holding on to your house is a smart choice.

The first style I’d like to discuss is called Hollywood glam. The golden age of Hollywood film was a 50-year period when a specific style was created. During that era, the monochrome format of the black and white film is a stark contrast to the rich colours, textures, and accents that “set the stage” for glamourous indulgence.

The black and white design evokes a classic feel similar to the old film. Adding accent decor pieces conveys your character and design theme. Incorporating mirrors, rugs, textured wall treatments, umbrella stand, elaborate picture frames, lighting, candles, vases, etc. will provide unity of style.

Use this as a guide to create balance, rhythm, scale, proportion, and harmony in any design style; 60% dominant colour, 30% secondary colour, and 10% accent or contrast colour.

The Bohemian style is popular for its eclectic and free-spirited sensibility. Natural and organic elements are a good fit. Include renewable materials like bamboo and hemp decorated with diverse baubles from your worldly travels and experiences. Incorporating the variety of life makes this style complete.

Do you like fewer things around to dust or clean with a harmonious balance of colours and materials? If so, then the minimalist style is for you. Focusing on function and simplicity with clean lines, that monochromatic palette we discussed earlier, and open spaces. Innovative new lighting technology can create negative spaces that visually reshape your home.

Similar in simplicity and marginal embellishment to minimalism, mid-century modern (MCM) design uses contoured lines, flanking organic shapes, and geometric patterns in a retro style. Exposed lightbulbs and plush decorative rugs accent the calm rustic finish. Wood panel accent walls emit an organic, warm feel.

The sharp lines used in MCM furniture and construction are used in all aspects of an Art Deco style. Luxurious and flash materials such as highly-lacquered mahogany, ebony, polished steel, chrome, and gold are used in repetition to create an almost mechanical feel. Geometric fragmented shapes are used in handbags, lampshades, and fashion designs with streamlined silhouettes. The “rule of three” is a key characteristic of this design. Three pillows on the couch, three pieces of art on a wall, three potted plants, etc.

Our traditional Aussie interior design has its lovely feel and nostalgic characteristics. “Relax” is the keyword in our style. Cotton and linen fabrics of soft white, smooth earth tones, cool blues, and greens are used to perfectly blend nature with living spaces.  Open floor plans and ample landscaping allow our homes to breathe as seasons and weather conditions fluctuate.

As 85% of us live within 50km of the coast; coastal design styles are very popular. By blending bohemian, eclectic, and traditional styling, we arrive at our seaside home. They are adorned with anchors, shells, oars, wicker furniture, and driftwood accents. This laid-back style draws you into relaxation mode as you put your feet into the sand for sun therapy. Tropical pastels, coral, and seafoam colours can be used to break the neutral hue.

One of the largest design styles globally is industrial. Exposed structural elements, vast open floor plans, steampunk industrial lighting fixtures, and a factory feel are used in this minimalist utilitarian design. Only rustic, matte finishes and brushed metals are used to create a muted feel. Vibrant artwork or focal furniture pieces are used to contrast the softened tone.

Holding on to your current home and improving it during this time will result in a significant increase in your real estate value. As your family grows with a new baby or two, you can add a room to your home in the best location. Eldercare facilities and senior living are very expensive. Building an additional room could save your family tens of thousands of dollars, and keep your loved one near you.

Buy Australian. When remodelling, adding on a room, or building a barn shed, use Australian products. Verify the housewares you buy are safe products for your family. The home construction market is brutally competitive. Maximize our job opportunities in trades and help local businesses thrive. When making your choices follow the same sustainable practices you would expect from your employer, state, or territory.
