Comics are often used to explore the dramatic, such as escaping a doomed planet or dealing with extreme circumstances that test one’s mettle — like becoming radioactive. In short, characters are thrust into horrifying, terrifying, or extreme circumstances. And Devour is no different.

True, in fleeing planets, raging while radioactive, and being a bad immortal, immoral, mercenary Redcoat after a dustup with a mysterious cadre called the Founding Fathers — these are terrifying, but they’re exterior dilemmas.

Meet the Grandmother from hell and the Health Guru, Miss Goodbody; these are bearers of an interior terror — the fear from which there’s no escape. A psychologically terrifying read, we look at the monster of our own expectations and the demands to act or look a certain way. And with villains like Miss Goodbody, it’s hard to look away!

Welcome to a story that comes to Hyde Street, brought to you by Ghost M’s creators — the premier, completely creator-owned, shared, and intertwined universe of Geiger, Rook, Hyde Street, Redcoat, and more!

Devour will eat away at the reader. Picture trying to please your family — a stretch, right? In this work written by Maytal Zchut (cue up the show Stargirl credits), the field of battle is the body you’re in. The comic invites readers to consider what it’s like to take up space, to be large and in charge, or to attempt to make yourself — literally — less, with that sentiment echoed in the tagline: Look thin…or die trying!

The premise: Lily has her upcoming wedding to plan and is pressured to lose pounds to fit into The Dress. Her slender grandmother is pushing to change Lily’s approach to one of Devour’s quick-fix miracle supplements peddled by the enigmatic health guru Miss Goodbody.

It Happened on Hyde Street: Devour is Maytal Zchut’s scary-good first time up at bat for universe crafting for the artist-owned comic collective, G Machine. The artwork is by Leila Leiz, colors by Alex Sinclair, and lettered by Rob Leigh. Cover A: Ivan Reis, Brad Anderson, Danny Miki. Alex Sinclair Leila Leiz. C & D: Alex Sinclair, Leila Leiz, and Brad Anderson. These creatives embody the ethos of Geoff Johns and G Machine’s tagline, “Creators, you know, characters you’ll love,” come to life in this extra-length one-shot landscape. Readers will want to devour this offering by The G Machine!

The scarily excellent one-shot, It Happened on Hyde Street: Devour, debuted in time for Halloween 2024, with a second reprint hitting comic book stores on November 27, 2024. Distributors eagerly grabbed Devour on its release day, leading Image Comics to rush a reprint — a testament to its appeal and quality. “I am so thrilled Devour is going to a second printing before it has even hit stores,” said Zchut. “I think this speaks to readers’ excitement over a topic not often covered.” Zchut continued, “I am very grateful to retailers for this show of faith.” The writer added, “for believing in a new voice in comics.” Brought to you by Ghost Machine!
