Many homes throughout the UK have fruit trees, and one of the most popular is apples, which have been a part of British cuisine for a long time. However, when autumn comes, and you have multiple trees, you can find yourself with an excess of fruit and not sure what you can do with them. You can do many things when you have lots of apples, and it can be something fun that involves the entire family. Below are some options to consider for what to do when you have a bumper harvest of apples that are also delicious, and your kids will love.

Dry Your Apples

Drying the excess apples from your apple trees is a simple option that will also provide a nutritious and healthy snack. All you need to do is core and slice the apples, leaving the peel on and dousing them in lemon juice. You can also add honey or pineapple juice for extra sweetness, and this will stop the apples from going brown. You can also add cinnamon if you wish, and you can then start drying your apples, which you can do in an oven or a dehydrator. Heat your oven to around 100 degrees Celsius, cook for an hour, turn the apples over, and cook for a further hour or a little longer if you want them crispy. Let the apples cool and place them in an airtight container where they should keep happily for at least a week if you have not eaten them all before.

Puree Your Apples

Another option is pureeing your excess apples, which you can use in many ways. You can use the puree in apple crumbles or pies or use it as a jam and eat it straight from the jar. To puree your apples, you will first need to wash them, peel and core them, and slice them, and you will also need sugar or sweetener. Place your apples in a large pan, add enough water to cover all the fruit, and bring the pan to a gentle boil, simmering it for 15 or 20 minutes until soft. You can now drain the apples and remove them from the water before putting them in a blender or mixing bowl and using a hand masher to create your puree. You can now put the puree in jars and store it in your fridge, serving it when it is nice and cool.

Juice Your Apples

Apple juice is a favourite of many children, so you can also consider turning your excess apples into delicious apple juice for your family to enjoy. You will need a juicer or an apple press to make apple juice, and it may not be suitable for all varieties of apples, as some are juicier than others. You will need to wash your apples, core them, and chop them into slices before putting into the juicer. You can then use a cheese cloth to strain the pulp from the juice and place in sterilised bottles. You can store the juice in the fridge for 2-3 days, but you can also freeze it which will make it last much longer.
