Got nothing to do on a fine Saturday morning? Now is the perfect time to roll up your sleeves, pay attention to the areas and corners in your house that are often overlooked, and give each of them a deep clean. We guarantee that at the end of your deep-clean marathon is the kind of satisfaction and contentment only a clean house can give. So, let’s get started.
1. Vacuum the rugs and carpets
There’s a good chance you might vacuum these everyday, but do you use deep cleaners? Use baking soda or vinegar to spray in your carpet; these get rid of the smell and stains. Then use your choice of backpack vacuum cleaners to remove all the accumulated dust, debris, and stains on your carpets. Have them look brand new just in time for you to host a casual Saturday brunch with your girls.
2. Scrub the light switches
If you think about the number of times you switch the lights on and off throughout the day, and the amount of germs that are on light switches, it’s enough to make anyone cringe. You definitely need to clean it at least once a week using a dampened cloth. It’s even better to mix water with a little bit of white vinegar and wet the cloth with this mixture. Just remember that the cloth wipe should be only slightly damp, not dripping.
3. Mop the walls, not just floors
Attach a dry absorbent cloth to the end of a mop, use the water and vinegar mixture, and press this cloth along the walls, trim, and the ceiling too if the rod is long enough. Use this to pick up dust, cobwebs, dirt, and even destroy growth of moulds. Remember never to use bleach against mould because this will only release harmful chemicals around the house. A water and vinegar mixture is your best bet.
4. Vacuum the pillows and mattresses
You sleep in your bed every single day so it only goes to say that your pillows and mattresses pick-up a lot of wear and tear. Dust and other allergens could easily accumulate in these areas so it’s absolutely necessary to run the vacuum on them at least once a week. Using your bagless vacuum cleaner, run the vacuum all across your mattress after dusting the surface with baking powder. This effectively takes away the smell of sweat and mildew from your bed. The vacuum makes sure that there are no dust and other allergy-inducing fibres on the bed or pillows.
5. Clean the remote controls
Again, if you think about it, remote controls are a breeding ground for bacteria and germs because various sets of hands handle it throughout the day. If you don’t clean these on a regular basis, you just might be spreading germs all around the house. Use a cloth dampened with an alcohol-based cleaner and wipe down the remote controls for the tv, the speakers, the air conditioners, and all other kinds of remote controls you have. Then use an absorbent cloth to dry the surface thoroughly.
6. Vacuum the filters in refrigerators and air conditioners
Aside from an annual cleaning and maintenance on these major appliances, you also need to invest the time and effort to regularly clean out the cooling filters of refrigerators and air conditioners. You don’t even have to get your hands dirty for this job. Just whip out your bagless vacuum cleaner and you’re all set to clean the filters of your cooling appliances.
7. Scrub down or wash the deck or patio
If you have a power washer lying around, it’s good to take it out and spray your deck for some thorough cleaning. Just watch as the mildew and dust stain disappears from your very eyes and your patio will look brand new. Even the original wood stain will show and the months of neglect will fade. This deep-cleaning task is so rewarding because you can watch the transformation of your deck in mere seconds.
8. Clean the oven and microwave
It’s easy enough to clean the inside of ovens and microwaves. Just use an absorbent microfibre cloth, dampen it with the water and vinegar mixture, and start scrubbing your way through. Don’t forget the corners of the microwave and especially the glass door. You can even assign this job to your pre-teen kids because, as they say, chores teach your kids about patience, resilience, and independence. There really is so much your kids can learn from being at home.
It’s easy enough to remember all these deep-cleaning tasks and do these every two weeks or at least once a month. You’ll find your home that much cleaner, smell nicer, the appliances and furniture better maintained, and the overall feel of the home that much purer. It really doesn’t get any better than this.
